A special tribute to a much-loved Richmond dance teacher will follow the Grand Pliéthis Friday.

A free ballet class for dancers of all ages and abilities, it’s appropriate that Morri-Lynn Buchanan also be recognized on International Dance Day on April 26 at the event from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. at the Richmond Centre, 7700 Minoru Gate.

Buchanan taught for more than 30 years, always ensuring that dancers of all abilities were included. She passed away in December, 2018 at the age of 62. Representatives from three Richmond dance groups will be in attendance to perform a selection of choreographed works created in collaboration with Buchanan.

Friday’s class (led by longtime ballet instructor Aubrey Walker) will highlight the physical aspects of the art form, while promoting the important role of the arts in the health and vibrancy of the community. Participants should arrive 15 minutes early to sign in. Fitted clothing and ballet slippers (or short socks that can be pulled over the heel) are recommended.

International Dance Day was founded in 1982 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) Dance Committee. The event takes place every year on April 29 to celebrate the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1717-1810), the creator of modern ballet. The Arts Centre began participating in this event five years ago with the creation of the Grand Plié, which is scheduled on, or as close to, the official day as possible.
