Charges were approved earlier this month for two people who were involved in a Richmond incident last October.

Richmond RCMP officers responded just before 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 9, 2021, to an electric vehicle charging station in the 4600 block of No. 3 Road (between Alderbridge Way and Cambie Road) for a weapons call. It is alleged that a 59-year old Vancouver man, who was charging his electric vehicle at a public charging station, was threatened with violence.

An investigation by the Richmond mobile enforcement team resulted in the arrest of two individuals and the seizure of individually packaged drugs and an 18-centimetre (seven-inch) knife.

On Aug. 9, 2022, charges were approved by the Public Prosecution Service of Canada against 22-year-old Gurleen Singh and 31-year-old Bo Ni Zhao, both of New Westminster.

Singh is charged with:

  • One count of unlawfully possessing a controlled substance, fentanyl, for the purposes of trafficking, contrary to Sec. 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • One count of unlawfully possessing a controlled substance, cocaine, for the purposes of trafficking, contrary to Sec. 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • One count unlawfully possessing a controlled substance, methamphetamine, for the purposes of trafficking, contrary to Sec. 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act

Zhao is charged with:

  • One count of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm contrary to sec. 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code

“The safety of our community is always of paramount concern. In this instance, what may have started as a minor altercation at an (electric vehicle) charging station escalated into a dangerous situation requiring police,” says Insp. Mark Baxter of the Richmond RCMP. “The rapid intervention by our officers may have prevented serious injuries or worse. In addition, while responding to this matter police identified and seized illicit drugs destined for our streets. The Richmond mobile enforcement team specializes in these types of investigations. You will be hearing much more about them in the future.”
