Richmond North Centre MLA Teresa Wat spoke in the Legislature earlier this week to celebrate Women’s History Month, recognizing and honouring the achievements and contributions of women everywhere.

This year is the 30th anniversary of Women’s History Month, and the theme is “she did, so now I can.” Wat spoke about her mother, who passed away a week ago.

“She was an extremely intelligent woman, and a real people person. She would have thrived in any career, but she chose to be a full-time wife and mother, which I will always be grateful for,” said Wat. “Her tireless support and care no doubt helped me to achieve my goals and dreams, and gave me the skills and confidence to pursue the seat that I hold in this house today. She inspires me to offer the same support to women in my community and beyond.”

This month represents an opportunity to honour Canadian women who fought hard for the rights women enjoy today. Wat also highlighted the work that needs to be done to build a more inclusive province for women, girls, Two-spirit, trans, and non-binary people who often are at the highest risk of experiencing gender-based violence and other systemic inequities.

“It is so important that we lift each other up and help each other succeed,” said Wat.
