The day was wet. The skies grey, but the spirit of warmth and giving abounded at the Nov. 16 RCMP Toy Drive & Pancake Breakfast fundraiser for The Richmond Christmas Fund.

The scent of warm pancakes pervaded the jovial site as the community lined up to get a pancake breakfast cooked by local Rotarians at Ironwood Plaza.

Sylvia Mahal, Rotary member and local real estate agent, smiled as she doled out the fresh-cooked breakfasts.

“This is great,” she said.

With many community groups and organizations pitching in, the toys and money donated will go a long way to brighten the spirits of families who need a little help with Christmas this year.

Ed Gavsie, president and CEO of Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives spearheads this community effort.

“It’s good to see everyone out today.”

As the giant RCMP safety bear, all decked out in his red serge suit, wandered about shaking hands, Santa stood under an easy-up for photos with all comers.

As the breakfast continued, families of all ages, shapes and sizes milled about, meeting new friends and old. Dignitaries mingled as the spirit of Christmas was off to a fine start in the shopping centre’s parking lot outside Save-on-Foods.

As each organization presented their cheque or unused toys, cheers rang out.

It was a soggy day but it was clear that in their hearts, everyone felt a warm glow.
