In a statement on Friday, Richmond School District Superintendent Scott Robinson updated families on what to expect now that Spring Break is over.

“We understand that many of you are experiencing uncertainty about your job and income, have concerns about childcare, and worry about keeping your children and family safe,” said Robinson.

The provincial government’s suspension of in-class instruction means that students cannot return to school until further notice.

Robinson said school district staff have been working on plans that will allow students to learn from home.

“We have been working hard to develop plans to support children and families who may be more vulnerable than others and will be reaching out to those families,” said Robinson.

Children of essential services workers who require child care will be allowed to spend time in schools. Other students who need to pick up essential items they have left at school will be allowed to do so in the coming weeks.

Staff will spend this week making plans to teach remotely. They hope to reach out to parents or students by the end of this week by phone or other electronic means.

The school district is working on a plan that will lend school district equipment—such as iPads—to students with limited or no access to technology at home.

The school district has also developed resources for how to help students cope with what is happening around them.

BC Minister of Education Rob Fleming announced Friday that new guidelines for school leaders and a new website will support students during this suspension of in-class education.

The new website, Keep Learning BC, has educational activities and free learning resources that kids can participate in at home.
