The federal government has some advice for those providing at-home care to a person diagnosed with COVID-19.

Limit contact

Care should be provided by only one healthy person. That person should be careful not to share personal items with the ill person, including towels, bed linen, or utensils.

Use a separate bathroom from the ill person if possible. If not possible, the ill person should put the toilet lid down before flushing.

Protect yourself

If possible, people at higher risk of serious illness should not act as caregivers for someone with COVID-19. This includes the elderly, those with chronic medical conditions or compromised immune systems.

If it is necessary to be within two metres of the ill person, wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and throw this equipment away after use. Wash hands often, for at least 20 seconds. Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.

Keep your environment clean

Used PPE should be put in a lined container and disposed of in sealed bags. Possibly contaminated laundry should be put into a sealed container and washed in hot water.

Surfaces touched often should be disinfected—with approved solutions—at least once per day, including toilets, doorknobs, phones and television remotes. These include:

Approved hard-surface disinfectants that have an 8-digit Drug Identification Number given by Health Canada. If these are not available, a diluted bleach solution can be prepared by following instructions on the label or using a ratio of five millilitres of five per cent bleach per 250 millilitres of water.

• High-touch electronic devices like touch screens may be disinfected with 70 per cent alcohol daily.

Monitor yourself for symptoms

In addition to following precautions, caregivers should monitor symptoms for 14 days following their last contact with the ill person.

If a caregiver has had direct contact with bodily fluids of the ill person, they should contact the BC Centre for Disease control online or call 811 for further instructions.

Maintain important supplies

Keep a stock of supplies including face masks, eye protection, disposable gloves, tissue, hand soap, disinfectant, and alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
