Since 2021, the Food Garden at Lansdowne Centre has grown and donated nearly 3,000 lbs of fresh produce to local organizations combating food insecurity. This year, the initiative expands its support to include the Meals on Wheels (MOW) program under The Health and Home Care Society of BC (Care BC), with continued donations to the Richmond Food Bank Society.

The MOW program delivers hot, nutritious meals to seniors, caregivers, and individuals with chronic or acute medical conditions, or those recovering from surgery or illness in Vancouver and Richmond. Fresh vegetables from the Lansdowne Food Centre will be part of these meals helping to nourish some of the most vulnerable members of the community.

“We are proud of the small impact we have made in the community to fight food insecurity. We have donated early 3,000 lbs of produce to families in need in the past four years. We also host free, weekly workshops at the Food Garden to help anyone interested learn to grow their own vegetables at home whether it is the back yard, patio, or balcony,” says Bronwyn Bailey, marketing manager at Lansdowne Centre.

The free gardening workshops hosted by Victory Gardens take place every Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the southeast parking lot near T&T Supermarket, running until September 4. Open to all ages and skill levels, each session features hands-on instruction on home gardening techniques and season planting tips. Crops grown in the garden include beets, carrots, fennel, broccoli, potatoes, garlic, cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, and more.
