A Richmond real estate development company is working together to make a difference to Richmond Hospital.

Everglade Development has dedicated its $15,000 marketing budget—which would normally last them six months—to Richmond Hospital Foundation.

“We wanted to do something to help,” says managing director Allen Zu. “We’re not a big company, so we have limited resources. We thought, if we donated to the hospital, they have the COVID-19 fund set up and targets for equipment and money.”

Zu says he and his team wanted to focus on Richmond Hospital because they’d seen a lot of initiatives for bigger hospitals and wanted to help out their community.

The Everglade team wanted to go beyond its own donation, so they set about creating a community-wide movement. A GoFundMe page enables community members to make their own donations.

Funds will go towards purchases of machines at Richmond Hospital. The GoFundMe has a goal of buying four CPR machines—and has already made enough to purchase one machine—but Zu says even if they don’t meet the goal, all funds will go to the hospital’s efforts.

Wanting to expand its reach even further, Everglade developed a hashtag: #RichmondTogether.

“We hope that this really describes and shows the intent of creating a community wide grassroots movement,” says Zu. “Raising money is one part of it, but the other part is to create that community pride.”

Richmond’s Lingyen Mountain Temple recently committed $10,000 to the cause, and many others are stepping up as well. The first donation of GoFundMe funds will be made Wednesday, followed by another donation in a few weeks.

Zu says his company’s donation came from a desire to help—although they’re a small operation.

“Fifteen thousand dollars is a lot of money to us. But it felt insensitive and insincere to go out and market right now—it’s not the right time to do that. This was really the right cause for us,” says Zu.

“Everyone wants to help, that’s what we’ve seen. It’s awesome to see, and it’s really rewarding for us as well.”
