Fire crews knock down wildfire on Shell Road

A wildfire on the Shell Road trail between Blundell Road and Francis has led to Blundell Road being shut down east of No. 4 Road.
Fire crews were called sometime before 4 p.m. to the scene, which City of Richmond spokesperson Ted Townsend described as a wild land fire, likely encompassing trees and brush and grass.
As of 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, the fire was in complete control, although not completely extinguished, Townsend said.
Two water cannons will be set up in the area to maintain water flow and to help ensure the fire doesn't spark back to life.
Townsend noted how other municipalities, including Vancouver and Surrey, have been battling fires of this type, and urged people to be extra cautious.
"It's extremely dry and hot and people need to be very careful especially regarding the disposing of smoking material," he said.
The Shell Road walking trail will be closed, and Townsend asked residents to respect the closure.
Townsend credited Richmond Fire-Rescue crews with responding quickly to the scene, and getting the fire under control. Four companies and a battalion chief were deployed to the area.
Inspectors will be combing over the scene Wednesday to try to determine the cause of the fire.
Townsend said that with the weather being so dry, even a small fire can quickly spread and become potentially life-threatening.
There were no reported injuries, Townsend said.
