Big Sugar to play at Canada Day fest in Steveston

Get ready to partake in the ultimate birthday
party this July 1st.
As part of Richmond Canada Day in Steveston,
an annual free, full-day street party throughout the village will complement
the beloved Steveston Salmon Festival. And this summer a headline performance
by Juno Award winners Big Sugar, and fireworks over the Fraser River, will top
the celebrations.
“Richmond is the place to celebrate Canada
Day,” says Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “From the biggest Canada Day Parade in the
region, to the ever-popular Salmon Festival, fireworks, music, fun and more,
there’s no better way to celebrate our nation’s birthday and show your national
pride with free fun for all ages.”
Initially formed in 1988 in Toronto, Big
Sugar is a Canadian blues, reggae rock band known for its live performances. “Diggin’
a Hole,” which peaked at No. 9 on the music charts in 1996, is one of its
classic tunes.
The Canada Day Street Party will also feature
an artisan village, marketplace and numerous food trucks. This year, a new
attraction will pay homage to Canada’s love for hockey. The Hockey Zone will
feature a fun 3-on-3 competition, with a special guest appearance by Vancouver
Canucks mascot Fin.
There will also be 50 diverse performances on
eight stages, including main stage performances by Big Sugar, Terra Lightfoot
and Vince Vaccaro.
Visitors may also want to explore the
village, and check out additional activities at the Gulf of Georgia National
Historic Site, Steveston Interurban Tram, and Steveston Museum.
Affectionately known as “Canada’s Biggest
Little Birthday Party,” the Steveston Salmon Festival since 1945 has been
famous for its salmon barbecue. More than 544 kilograms (1,200 pounds) of wild
salmon filets are grilled over open fire pits. The fun begins with the
always-popular Canada Day Parade.
The day will start with the Salmon Festival’s
pancake breakfast at 6:30 a.m., followed by a special Canada Day flag-raising
ceremony at 8:40 a.m. The Canada Day Parade gets underway at 10 a.m. Big Sugar
will hit the Bayview stage at 9 p.m., followed immediately at 10:15 p.m. by the
fireworks show along the waterfront.
Richmond Canada Day in Steveston is produced
by the City of Richmond and presented by Vancouver International Airport. The
Steveston Salmon Festival is produced by the Richmond Agricultural and Industrial
Society.
