Richmond city councillors are in favour of a parking lot next to Bridgeport Canada Line station.

The proposed lot includes 32 spaces located at 8620 and 8660 Beckwith Road. City staff noted during this week’s general purposes committee meeting that there are approximately 200 free on-street parking stalls for both Canada Line commuters and local business patrons. These will be converted to time limited parking to encourage use of the paid parking lot.

Construction of the lot will cost about $46,000, of which $9,000 is the cost for the meter alone. Councillors voted in favour of a $3 daily rate, the same cost users would pay to park for up to 24 hours in the “park and ride” spaces in the River Rock Casino Resort parking structure.

“That rate is set by TransLink, not by the River Rock, so there is a real reluctance on them to increase that rate, so it’s not likely to zoom up anytime soon,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

Neighbouring businesses will be consulted for their feedback on the proposed lot.
