Shoppers Drug Mart and Food Banks Canada are teaming up to help end period poverty.

According to a 2018 Plan Canada study, nearly one in four Canadian women (23 per cent) have faced period poverty—experiencing inadequate access to period products. But more than three-quarters (78 per cent) of Canadians said they were unfamiliar with the term “period poverty,” according to a Shoppers survey.

Along with donating non-perishable food to food banks, people can donate period products to help women in need. With the COVID-19 pandemic continuing, the need for donated essentials will be greater than ever.

“Availability of period products at local food banks is essential in preserving the dignity of

Canadian women who should never have to make the choice between food and

period products,” says Food Banks Canada CEO Chris Hatch. “Your local food bank accepts and encourages donations of period products, so that together we can help bring period poverty in Canada to an end."

Canadians can also help carry the momentum forward by visiting shoppersdrugmart.ca/periodpoverty to learn more, or visit foodbankscanada.ca to find a location nearby to make a donation.
