Country Meadows golfers share goodwill

Thanks to the generosity of the Country
Meadows Senior Men’s Golf Club, 11 more local families were able to have a
merry Christmas.
The group of players raised more than $4,000
during the holiday season to help purchase gifts and supply meals, said club
captain Chuck Dunn.
Each year, the club hosts a Christmas Charity
Breakfast at which food and funds to spend on gifts for the families is
generated. The charity began as a private initiative in the late 1990s by Roger
Weseen, a club golfer who passed away in 2005. Initially, a group of Monday
morning winter golfers that included many of the club members would put a box
in the pro shop and collect food. They would then host a Christmas lunch and
each donate money. The food and gifts purchased would then be distributed to
one or two under-privileged families at Christmas.
“Our motto is golf is our passion, giving is
our mission,” said Dunn, adding the club also aids in prostate cancer research.
Each September, the club hosts a tournament
that specifically raises funds for prostate cancer research. It has generated
an average of $100,000 for the cause each of the last several years, with the total
now exceeding $1.3 million. The 2018 charity classic is set to tee off Sept. 7
at Country Meadows.
Dunn says since 2000 funds have gone to
support Marianne Sadar, program leader for prostate cancer research at the BC
Cancer Agency, to purchase much-needed equipment.
