Textiles students at McMath secondary learned to make face masks out of scrap fabric.
“The face mask project was the first sewing project after (the students) practiced some stitches,” says textiles teacher Akiko Kato. “Some students already knew how to sew a face mask, yet there are so many different types. They liked using different patterns.”
This year’s textiles projects are focused on recycling, making students aware of environmental issues in the clothing industry and helping them transform old things into new things. Most students made their masks out of scrap fabric brought from home.
“I wanted them to understand that wearing a face mask helps protect them and others,” says Kato. “Instead of using disposable masks every day, they can make good masks using scrap fabrics and just wash them.”
Students made two masks each, and the finished masks are displayed in cases so others can see them. Students will be able to bring their masks home this week.
“Some students mentioned that they made face masks (as gifts) for their parents and siblings,” says Kato.
