Have you ever wondered where the banners gracing our light standards across Richmond come from? The designs come from the citizens of Richmond. The City makes and installs the banners.

Anyone can submit a banner design to the city. You needn’t be a professional artist and you have lots of options. You can submit:

• Photography

• Digital art

• Collage

• Painting and illustration

• Printmaking

Just pick a category, create your entry, then submit it to the city at richmondstreetbanners.squarespace.com/welcome/

According to city spokesperson, Ted Townsend, “Up to 10 winning designs will be chosen this fall. These designs will be turned into 1,000 street banners which will be installed throughout Richmond’s downtown core, on walking paths and on main gateways leading in and out of the city. The banners will be displayed for one year beginning in February 2018.”

For your creation, you can choose from among six themes:

• Parks and Nature

• Active Living

• Community Pride

• City Centre

• Transportation

• Arts, Culture and Heritage

According to Townsend, “New this year, a community volunteer judging panel will select up to 20 designs as semi-finalists and the final judging will come down to a public vote. All semi-finalist designs will be posted on the City of Richmond’s Facebook page and City’s webpage for public voting and the community will be invited to ‘like’ their favourite design. The top 10 designs with the most ‘likes’ will be considered as finalists for the 2017 Street Banner Contest. “

Not only do you earn bragging rights but also a $300 honorarium and a banner of your own.
