Richmond RCMP are hoping to identify the suspect in a hate incident that happened May 1.

The suspect was reportedly standing near a restaurant drive-thru window at Ironwood Plaza when he approached a family in a sports utility vehicle (SUV) and began yelling at them. When a bystander intervened to tell the suspect to leave, the suspect began hurling anti-Asian slurs at him.

Investigators apparently learned of the incident two days later, after video began circulating on social media.

As a result, police were unable to locate the man, identify him, and speak to him immediately.

“Richmond RCMP is committed to giving hate crimes, and other hate incidents where hateful language is used, our fullest attention and oversight,” said Richmond RCMP Cpl. Ian Henderson. “But to do a fulsome investigation, we need people to report these incidents immediately.”

Henderson said the time delay in reporting this matter, and providing the video evidence to police, has caused some delay in the progress of this investigation.

“We need people to call us immediately, before posting video of hate crimes or hate incidents on line. In order to conduct a fulsome investigation, we need the best evidence available, which means we need the raw, unaltered video, and we need it quickly so we can identify and locate the suspect quickly,” said Henderson.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian man, five-foot-six, with a heavy build, short grey hair and a partial beard. He was wearing a grey long sleeved shirt, blue jeans and black rimmed glasses at the time of the incident.

If you know the identity of this suspect, if you witnessed this incident, or if you also have photos or video of this incident, contact the Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212, quoting file number 21-11759.
