Richmond RCMP is pleased to report on the successful execution of the Road Safety Day held at Hugh Boyd Secondary School on Friday, May 31, 2024. This event was a collaborative effort involving ICBC and other community partners and first responders, aimed at promoting road safety awareness among high school students as they approach graduation and the milestone of obtaining their driver’s licenses.

The event featured interactive activities and educational presentations from various stakeholders. Over 500 students engaged with Richmond RCMP and other first responders, learning about the critical aspects of road safety. Richmond RCMP Speed Watch Volunteers conducted outreach along No. 1 Road, reminding drivers to slow down and obey posted limits.

Richmond RCMP Community Engagement Team (CET), Youth Intervention Unit (YIU), and Road Safety Unit (RSU) conducted activities such as impaired vision goggle tests to show the effects of impairment on driving abilities, and an interactive presentation to senior grades.

“Your decisions behind the wheel have far-reaching consequences. Making smart, safe choices is essential not only for your safety but also for the safety of everyone else on the road,” said Inspector Mark Baxter, proactive environment and administrative services officer, Richmond RCMP.

Encouraging parental involvement

Richmond RCMP stresses the importance of parental involvement in reinforcing road safety education at home, and urges parents and caregivers to engage in regular conversations with their teens about the responsibilities that come with driving.

Parents are encouraged to:

  • Discuss the dangers of impaired and distracted driving;
  • Set clear rules and expectations about safe driving behaviours;
  • Lead by example by practicing safe driving behaviours themselves.

Richmond RCMP is committed to fostering a safe community through proactive policing and community engagement. This Road Safety Day is a testament to our ongoing efforts to promote public safety and education.
