Richmond School District representatives continue to offer support and information to parents and students learning from home.

Superintendent Scott Robinson said families should expect to receive year-end progress reports for each student, accompanied by a final performance scale or grade. Students’ ability to progress through the school system will not be negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Richmond schools are using several technology platforms, and the district continues to work to make these as accessible and user-friendly as possible. The district is in the process of loaning more than 800 iPads to families without access to technology at home.

A chart indicates daily suggested lengths of time for learning: 60 minutes for Kindergarten and Grade 1 students, 90 minutes for Grade 2 and 3 students, 120 minutes for Grade 4 to 7 students, and no more than 180 minutes for Grade 8 to 12 students.

During Monday’s COVID-19 task force meeting, board chair Ken Hamaguchi said one of this week’s goals is providing more opportunities for vulnerable learners.

Vulnerable learners may include students with significant special needs, students who require counselling due to emotional difficulties at home, and Grade 12 students who are currently failing a course required for graduation.

The school district is working on plans to support these students with face-to-face opportunities in schools. These solutions will take provincial health and safety protocol into account.
