How to toss your hat in the ring

If you’re thinking of running for civic
office in the Oct. 20 election, Richmond City Hall offers an information
package.
The instructions are available at
city's website or at the Richmond Elections Office, from 8:30 a.m. to
5 p.m. at Richmond City Hall, 6911 No. 3 Rd.
According to Ted Townsend, Richmond’s
director of corporate communications and marketing, to run in the Richmond
Election, a candidate must:
1. Be a resident of BC for at least six
months before filing their nomination documents
2. Be at least 18 years old on General Voting
Day
3. Be a Canadian citizen
4. Not be disqualified by law
Townsend says, “The candidate nomination
period begins on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 9 a.m. and ends on Friday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m.
Candidates and elector organizations are encouraged to make an appointment with
the Richmond Elections Office by emailing elections@richmond.ca to officially
file their candidacy between those dates.”
The online information for people thinking of
tossing their hat in the ring includes videos produced by the provincial government
and the BC School Trustees Association. These videos outline characteristics of
effective locally-elected officials, readiness for office, and local government
decision making.
Townsend says: “On Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018,
Richmond voters will be electing a mayor, eight councillors, and seven school trustees.
Those elected will serve in office for four years."
