Jets, Ravens team up in support of kids
The first official community event for the
Richmond Jets proved to be a hair-raising experience.
Joining forces with Richmond Ravens girls’
hockey, the newly-formed Jets minor hockey association (a result of the recent
amalgamation of Seafair and Richmond) hosted the eighth annual Head Shaving and
Hair Donation event Saturday at Shay’s Hair Studio and Steveston Barbers.
Nearly $20,000 was raised to support BC Children’s Hospital, with the total
through the years now exceeding $95,000.
“That’s a pretty impressive amount of money
for two local minor hockey associations,” says Cody Kusch, with whom the idea
originated. “Next year, we will break the $100,000 mark and will be looking to
involve our Pacific Coast and BC Hockey members as well. Can’t wait.”
Now a member of the Jets’ executive board,
Kusch was in a similar capacity with Seafair when he introduced the Head
Shaving and Hair Donation among a number of community initiatives.
Mothers, fathers, sons and daughters in the
local hockey community participated in last weekend’s event, an opportunity
Kusch sees as a way to “nurture our kids’ charity minds early.”
“While our boys and girls are healthy enough
to still play hockey, and sometimes worry about not making it to a banner game,
other kids at the hospital sometimes worry about their next chemo therapy
appointment,” he says. “There is a special bonding that occurs when our boys
and girls see us do what we preach.”

it is.
