Two Grade 10 students from Richmond have teamed up to support literacy for girls in developing countries.

Adeeba Husain and Christie Sum are launching what they hope will be an annual Walk for Education on Saturday (June 16) from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Terra Nova Rural Park, 2340 River Rd.

The girls created Walk for Education to raise awareness that many girls and women in developing countries do not have the opportunity to attend school or learn skills to achieve a brighter future for themselves and their families.

Hussain and Sum believe that education should be a fundamental right. They say fundraising for this global cause is a way to spread the message.

The kernel for the idea was an assignment from their social studies class, from which they concluded they can make the most difference by involving the greater community.

Walk for Education is supported by Plan International, a non-profit global organization that works to address childhood poverty. “Because I am A Girl” is Plan International’s global initiative to support youth-led projects and movements to fight for girls’ rights and gender equality.

According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization estimates that 130 million girls between the ages of six and 17 are out of school and 15 million primary-aged will never enter classroom. Many barriers prevent girls from receiving education including forced marriage, poverty and long commutes to schools.
