From the Eastern shores of Newfoundland and Labrador to British Columbia’s West Coast, the TD Canadian Children’s Book Week tour aims to celebrate the joys of reading.

As part of the nationwide event from Saturday, May 5 through Saturday, May 12, renowned Canadian children’s author Tom Ryan will be holding a live reading at the Brighouse Branch of the Richmond Public Library (7700 Minoru Gate) at 1 p.m. Monday, May 7.

“I started making up stories before I could even read or write,” says Ryan, one of 30 authors, illustrators and storytellers who will be sharing their love of books during 400 readings over the next week.

Ryan is the author of several books for young readers and has been nominated for several awards. Two of the Nova Scotian’s books were Junior Library Guild selections. His young adult novels, Way to Go and Tag Along were chosen for the ALA Rainbow List in 2013 and 2014. He was a 2017 Lambda Literary Fellow in Young Adult Fiction.

Like many people, Ryan says he’s had his share of interesting jobs including washing dishes in a restaurant (which formed the basis for his most recent novel, Pop Quiz) “but nothing makes me as happy as writing books and meeting readers.”

TD has supported unique programs like Canadian Children’s Book Week for more than three decades. The goal to help provide greater access to reading resources and early learning opportunities, and to help open doors and create a more inclusive tomorrow.
