COVID-19 hospitalizations in BC are approaching record highs.

Today there are 142 people hospitalized, nine more than yesterday and just seven away from the April peak of 149. Forty-six of the people hospitalized are in critical care, and sadly there were three new virus-related deaths for a total of 284.

Health authorities also reported 525 new cases of COVID-19 today, bringing BC’s cumulative case count to 19,239. Once again, new cases are disproportionately centred in the Fraser Health region, with 325 of today’s cases located there. An additional 159 of the new cases are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, which includes Richmond. BC’s other three health authorities continue to see lower case increases.

The number of active cases has surpassed 5,000, with 5,133 reported today. There are nearly 10,000 people (9,781) under active public health monitoring as a result of identified exposure to known cases.

There were two new healthcare facility outbreaks, leaving 39 total outbreaks in the sector: 33 in longterm care or assisted living facilities and six in acute care facilities.

Health authorities said it’s important to break the chains of transmission and slow the surge in COVID-19 cases, especially in regions of highest spread.

“The regional health authority restrictions are a short-term pause on non-essential activities to ensure we can maintain capacity within our healthcare system and continue important essential activities,” they said. “We need to slow down and take a step back to allow us to safely move forward in the weeks ahead.

“We can turn this trend around and the time to do that is now.”
