In their last update before Christmas, BC health officials presented data that showed if people increase their number of contacts, COVID-19 transmission could begin to increase rapidly once more.

“It would not take much for us to get back into a danger zone again,” said provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.

She also announced 518 new cases of the virus today, bringing BC’s total up to 48,027. Of the new cases, 97 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 332 in the Fraser Health region, nine in the Island Health region, 49 in the Interior Health region and 31 in the Northern Health region.

There are 9,137 active cases and about 9,689 people under active public health monitoring, although this number does not include the Northern Health region due to a data transition there.

Across BC, 348 are hospitalized with COVID-19, 80 of whom are in critical care. Sadly, 19 people have died since yesterday, bringing that total to 796.

There were two new healthcare outbreaks announced, one of which is in the 1 East wing of Richmond’s Minoru Residence, and two declared over. There remain 55 active outbreaks in longterm care and assisted living facilities and six in acute care facilities, including the 4N and 6N units at Richmond Hospital.

So far, 5,603 people have been vaccinated. Henry said between now and March, almost 800,000 doses of vaccine will arrive in BC. The plan is for about 549,000 people to receive one dose and an additional 243,000 people to also receive a second dose.
