BC’s COVID-19 positivity rate down slightly from weekend

BC health authorities reported 428 new cases of COVID-19 today, based on 5,915 tests conducted, for a positivity rate of 7.20 per cent.

Over the four-day weekend, the positivity rate was 8.60 per cent. Two of today’s new cases are epidemiologically linked, and BC’s cumulative total has reached 54,629 cases.

Ninety of the new cases are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 223 in the Fraser Health region, nine in the Island Health region, 61 in the Interior Health region and 45 in the Northern Health region.

There are now 6,472 active cases, a decrease from yesterday, but the number of people hospitalized increased by 16 to 367 (77 of those requiring intensive care). Another 8,596 people are under active public health monitoring.

Sadly, there were eight new virus-related deaths. To date, 28,209 people have received a COVID-19 vaccine in British Columbia. 

There was one new healthcare facility outbreak at St. Paul’s Hospital. There are now 53 longterm care or assisted living facilities and eight acute care facilities with active outbreaks.

A public alert has been issued for the Revelstoke region, where community transmission and new cases of COVID-19 have increased substantially in recent days. 

The province also extended its state of emergency a further two weeks today, through Jan. 19.
