B.C. marks one year since first COVID-19 case

Today marks one year since B.C.’s first confirmed case of COVID-19.

“Since that day, the impact has been severe; people have become seriously ill and died, our lives have been disrupted and healthcare workers everywhere have faced challenges at a scale never experienced before,” said health officials in a statement.

They also reported 485 new cases today for a total of 65,719 in B.C. since the pandemic began. Of the new cases, 115 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 210 in the Fraser Health region, 45 in the Island Health region, 83 in the Interior Health region and 32 in the Northern Health region.

There are 4,299 active cases and 303 people hospitalized, 74 of whom are in intensive care. A further 6,520 people are under active public health monitoring.

To date, 124,365 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in B.C., 4,160 of which are second doses.

There were four new COVID-19 related deaths in the last 24 hours, for a total of 1,172 in the province.

Health officials announced one new healthcare facility outbreak and declared another over. The outbreak at Richmond’s Minoru Residence remains active. They also announced an outbreak at the Fraser Regional Correctional Centre.
