The number of new cases of COVID-19 in B.C. continues at a higher rate, with 559 reported today.
B.C. records 559 new COVID-19 cases

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced 559 new cases of COVID-19 in B.C. today, including 29 that are epidemiologically linked. There have been 77,822 cases in the province since the pandemic began.
Of the new cases, 132 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 278 in the Fraser Health region, 39 in the Island Health region, 43 in the Interior Health region, 66 in the Northern Health region and one in a person who lives outside Canada.
The active cases continue to increase slowly, with 4,677 recorded today. There are 238 people in hospital—a 15-person increase from yesterday’s number—and 69 of those people are in critical care. A further 7,881 people are under active public health monitoring.
There was one death overnight in an acute care unit in the Vancouver Coastal Health region. There were no new healthcare outbreaks announced, and one existing outbreak was declared over. Twelve outbreaks remain in long-term care and assisted living facilities and five in acute care facilities, affecting 415 residents and 218 staff members.
To date, 224,354 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered, of which 165,458 are first doses and 58,896 are second doses, mostly to seniors and elders in long-term care.
Henry said it’s concerning to see the percent positivity increase, as well as the seven-day rolling average of new cases—particularly in the Lower Mainland.
“This uptick we’ve seen in the last few days is one we are managing as aggressively as we can to understand better where we are,” she said.
“We are in a period of vaccine hope and pandemic reality. And our focus has to be to hold steady, to support each other to get through this part of our marathon, our storm, even when it becomes more and more challenging.”
