Daily COVID-19 case count highest in two months

B.C. health officials reported 648 new cases of COVID-19 in the province today, the highest single-day total since Jan. 7.
Two of the new cases are epidemiologically linked, bringing the province’s total to 86,867 cases since the pandemic began.
Of the new cases, 149 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 372 in the Fraser Health region, 32 in the Island Health region, 39 in the Interior Health region and 56 in the Northern Health region.
Active cases reached 5,070, their highest since Jan. 11. There are 255 people hospitalized with COVID-19, 67 of whom are in intensive care. A further 9,155 people are under active public health monitoring.
There have been 79 new confirmed cases that are variants of concern, for a total of 717 cases to date. Of those cases, 99 are active. The number includes 667 cases of the B.1.1.7 (U.K.) variant, 36 cases of the B.1.351 (South Africa) variant and 14 cases of the P.1 (Brazil) variant.
To date, 380,743 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in B.C., 87,024 of which are second doses. Vaccine appointment bookings are now open for people over 85 and Indigenous people over 65.
There were no new deaths related to the virus today for the first time in months. But there were two new healthcare facility outbreaks, leaving nine active outbreaks in long-term care or assisted living facilities and nine in acute care units.
