As B.C. reports 1,506 new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend, the 269 hospitalizations related to the virus are the highest since Feb. 3.
Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said there were 555 new cases from Friday to Saturday, 491 from Saturday to Sunday and a further 460 in the last 24 hours. Eight of the weekend’s new cases are epidemiologically linked. B.C. has recorded 88,373 cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began.
Of the new cases over the weekend, 382 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 840 in the Fraser Health region, 75 in the Island Health region, 80 in the Interior Health region and 129 in the Northern Health region.
There are 4,987 active cases, and 76 of the people hospitalized are in critical care. Over 9,000 people are being monitored by public health. Ten people sadly lost their lives due to COVID-19 over the weekend.
One new healthcare outbreak was announced at the UBC Hospital and one new community outbreak at a glass manufacturer in Langley.
Henry reported 163 new cases of variants of concern, bringing that total to 880 cases. Of the new cases, 151 are the B.1.1.7 (U.K.) variant, five are the B.1.351 (South Africa) variant and seven are the P.1 (Brazil) variant. There are 195 active cases of variants of concern, nearly double Friday’s reported number of 99.
To date, 409,103 doses of immunization have been administered, including 87,059 second doses. Henry said despite concerns around the AstraZeneca vaccine in other countries, she is confident the issues related to blood clots are not a risk seen in Canada. She said more information about the priority groups for the AstraZeneca vaccine will soon be presented publicly.
Next week, there will be information on resuming outdoor in-person religious services. Henry said she also expects indoor in-person services to be able to return, in a phased approach, beginning in April.
“The number of new cases is still very high, much higher than I would like it to be,” she acknowledged.
