The end of the school year looks a little different in Richmond this year, with the heat wave forcing schools to close.
With forecasted highs above 30 degrees Celsius today, public schools were closed. Similar temperatures are predicted for tomorrow, which was originally scheduled to be the last day of class for most elementary schools.
“Internal temperatures in our schools are very hot today, and temperatures are not expected to drop significantly for tomorrow according to the weather forecast,” said Superintendent Scott Robinson in a letter to families.
“We will therefore only be opening schools tomorrow morning for students to pick up items such as report cards or belongings they may need to take home with them over the summer. Staff will be in attendance at schools to distribute items first thing in the morning at the usual school start time, and then students will be immediately dismissed for the summer.”
Students who do not need to pick anything up from school are asked to stay at home tomorrow if possible.
Some schools scheduled the Grade 7 leaving ceremony for today or tomorrow, and those parents will hear directly from their child’s principal or teacher.
While secondary schools officially finished last Friday, some are still in the process of distributing items including yearbooks. Schools will contact families directly about distribution.
“Once again, I would like to thank all parents for your patience and understanding of yet another challenging circumstance that we are all navigating together,” said Robinson. “I wish you and your families a relaxing and enjoyable summer.”
