B.C. reaches 10-week high

The 342 new COVID-19 cases reported in B.C. today is the highest one-day count since May 27, nearly 10 weeks ago.
The seven-day rolling average has risen to 218, up from 196 yesterday and 115 a week ago.
The rise in cases may be attributed in part to the Delta variant, which accounted for 61 per cent of all variant cases between July 18 and 24 as of Friday’s report. The previous week that number was 39 per cent, and a month ago just 13 per cent.
Six of today’s cases are epidemiologically linked. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 150,973 cases.
Of the new cases, 57 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 66 in the Fraser Health region, 32 in the Island Health region, 171 in the Interior Health region, 13 in the Northern Health region and three new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.
In Richmond, the pandemic situation appears a little more optimistic. The latest data from the B.C. Centre for Disease Control shows that between July 27 and Aug. 2, Richmond made up two per cent of the province’s new cases, despite four per cent of the total population living here.
There are 1,764 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 55 of those people are hospitalized, 23 of whom are in intensive care.
To date, 6,931,815 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 3,146,669 of those are second doses.
This means that 82.4 per cent of adults and 81.5 per cent of people aged 12 and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 70.1 per cent of adults and 67.9 per cent of those aged 12 and older have received two doses.
Local vaccination progress is above average in terms of first doses, with 84 per cent of those 12 and older having received one dose as of yesterday. But only 64 per cent had received a second dose, which is below the provincial average. Vaccination coverage remains highest in Steveston and lowest in Blundell, Broadmoor and City Centre.
There were no new virus-related deaths reported today.
Three more long-term care homes in the Interior Health region have active outbreaks, bringing the total to five facilities—one in the Fraser Health region and four in the Interior Health region.
