Multicultural fun awaits all comers at the Pull of the Net Celebration

Gulf of Georgia Cannery invites landlubbers young and old to The Pull of the Net Celebration
Richmond’s Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site in Steveston offers family fun this Saturday, May 4 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“The Pull of the Net” celebrates all the cultures who have fished the Salish Sea starting with the original peoples, the Musqueam.
The free event offers a multitude of things to do including tours of the cannery and its newest exhibit—about salmon can labels used through history—The Label Unwrapped: the history of canned salmon labels(open May 2019 to Spring 2021), as well as the The Cannery Cat's Collection, a temporary exhibit celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Gulf of Georgia Cannery.
With something to tempt all the senses, there will be tasty things to eat, music to hear, displays and dances to see all day at the cannery.
Some of the cultures in the celebration include Salish song and dance, Chinese lion dance, Japanese Taiko drummers, Greek music, Scottish highland dancing and Canadian settler maritime music.
Cannery museum spokesperson Mimi Horita said offerings for the day include workshops, demonstrations, crafts, and food tastings by community groups and artists including Alana Hansen, Christine Mackenzie, Richmond Chinese Artists Club, Earthhand Gleaners Society, Kisamos, Pangaea Arts, Pathways Aboriginal Youth Centre, Richmond Art Gallery, Richmond Public Library, Scandinavian Community Centre, Steveston Historical Society, Vancouver Cantonese Opera, Wheelhouse Seafoods, and YK3 Sake.
