This Friday (June 3), the Richmond Centre for Disability (RCD) will host a celebration in honour of the city’s declaration of National AccessAbility Week from May 29 to June 4.
The event will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. at RCD inside Lansdowne Centre (842–5300 No. 3 Rd.).
“The City of Richmond is proactively advancing accessibility and inclusion throughout all aspects of community life,” says RCD board of directors chairwoman Renee Leung. “We are honoured to have Andy Hobbs, Acting Mayor of the City of Richmond, to come and share the excitement of this proclamation by acknowledging the work of RCD with a presentation, and also to celebrate the valuable contributions of Canadians with disabilities.”
This year’s theme for National AccessAbility week is “Inclusive from the Start,” with RCD aiming to dedicate the week to accessibility and inclusion in communities.
“During this event, we wish to highlight and compliment the work of individuals with disabilities who work hard to remove barriers in order to pursue their dreams, and we will invite several of these individuals to speak about their achievements,” says RCD executive director Ella Huang. “We are also proud to present an art show with paintings donated to us by our members and volunteers which will showcase the talents of persons with disabilities.”
The event is open to members of the public. Speakers include:
• Wilson Tam, RCD participant and Special Olympic gold medal winner)
• Emily De Boer, RCD board member and member of Athletics Canada’s high performance women team
• Vince Miele RCD board member and member of B.C.’s championship wheelchair curling team
