Richmond-Steveston MLA John Yap has presented a $13,000 cheque from the BC Community Gaming Grant to the Institute of Applied Design and Technology Education Society, for the Game of Apps program in schools.

With the motto, “Preparing Youth for 21st Century Careers,” the society offers the program to allow high school students the ability to develop, market and pitch their apps with the help of industry mentors.

Software developer Roland Tecson, who founded Game of Apps said, “(We) appreciate the tremendous support we've received from the BC Community Gaming Grant. This will help us continue to offer this unique program to many deserving high school students in the province."

Tecson said the program guides high school students through the entire process of building apps from beginning to end. Local professional designers and developers mentor the students weekly and teach them how to use the same tools, techniques and processes employed in the industry while the students learn to build mobile apps.

The 24-week program culminates with the student teams pitching their apps and demoing to a panel of judges. The top teams from each school district will go on to compete against other school districts for the provincial titles.
