BC state of emergency extended

The provincial government has formally extended the state of emergency in BC through April 28.

This allows Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth to continue to support the province through the Emergency Program Act.

Farnworth said he’s proud of the work British Columbians have done, but there is more work to come.

“We must hold our ground and take all the steps needed to make sure our communities remain safe and our essential service workers are supported in our ongoing efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19,” he said.

Premier John Horgan said BC responded quickly to the COVID-19 crisis, and thanked Albertans for helping provide BC with personal protective equipment when our province was in need.

“Through this challenging time, British Columbians are leading the way in our efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19,” said Horgan. “We are starting to see the results of our sacrifice, dedication and hard work, and we must continue to be steadfast in our commitment to keep our communities safe—for ourselves, our loved ones and our workers on the front lines.”

Horgan said the vast majority of British Columbians have been following advice from provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.

“I think public scorn is as good a penalty as a ticket,” he said of those who don’t follow current guidelines.

Horgan added that this is not the time to travel around BC, even to private cottages.

The original state of emergency was declared on March 18. This declaration was a response to Henry’s declaration of a public health emergency the previous day.
