Coevorden Castle to serve as childcare centre

A replica of an 11th century Dutch castle
that was a centrepiece of a gathering place at Expo ’86—and later at Fantasy
Gardens—has now been fully restored.
The 2,100-square-foot Coevorden Castle, a
replica of the eponymous castle in
the city of Coevorden on the eastern edge of the Netherlands which served as
the ancestral home of Capt. George Vancouver, is expected to officially open as
soon as this week.
Chris Colbeck, vice president of sales and
marketing for developer Townline Homes, told The Sentinel that the castle and
adjoining 2,400 square-foot former sales centre, will serve as childcare space
for up to 37 children up to five years of age.
The castle sits at the entrance to The
Gardens master-planned residential development that features two eight-storey
concrete condo buildings (Dahlia and Calla) as well as a 23-unit townhouse
development known as Jasmine, and other mid and low-rise condo buildings Azalea,
Magnolia and Camellia.
Work on Coevorden Castle began a year ago,
and includes extensive structural work to bring the building up to current
building code standards and to satisfy city and provincial rules for life and
safety, Colbeck said.
The entire project cost $1.8 million.
The site of the former Fantasy Gardens
encompassed 23 acres, with 12 acres contributed to the City of Richmond as part
of Townline Homes’ community amenity contribution.
The residential project sits on 11 acres, on
the former footprint of the Fantasy Gardens theme park and parking lot.
