BC’s back to school plan has Richmond parents wondering if the new regulations will support their children, or even keep them safe. And that has prompted Richmond School Board to submit a letter to Education Minister Rob Fleming.

“We are concerned that the current return to school schedule is too rigid and may not result in the welcoming, calm and orderly experience for our students that we all want,” says the letter, which was signed by board chair Ken Hamaguchi.

The letter notes it will be challenging to obtain feedback from families in order to place students in assigned classes and cohorts before Sept. 10. Trustees are also requesting further flexibility and a gradual entry process as school districts re-open.

The letter says parents are also concerned about program options, including whether or not their children will lose their spots at their local school if they do not remain enrolled this year. Many parents continue to express fear and anxiety about in-person schooling, according to the letter.

“It would be our hope that students whose parents choose not to have their child immediately return to in-person instruction in September can be placed in the school, and hold a fully-funded spot, even if they register for home schooling or distributed learning,” the letter reads.
